ASSA ABLOY is working with Boston Dynamics to introduce a new digital access solution that allows Spot security patrol robots to unlock and open accessed-controlled automated doors autonomously.

“The partnership between ASSA ABLOY and Boston Dynamics evolved from recognizing the increasing demand for ways to integrate autonomous access control with the robotic security patrol and industrial equipment inspection capabilities that Boston Dynamics Spot robots provide,” said Angelo Faenza, head of digital access solutions at ASSA ABLOY Opening Solutions Americas. “Our partnership developed an onboard access control credential solution that allows Spot robots to autonomously open secured doors, enabling frictionless movement between building exteriors and interiors and within a building without requiring human assistance. This solution is revolutionizing how security and industrial operations are conducted by seamlessly adding autonomous patrols to existing teams, reducing the time and labor required for security rounds or other inspections and data collection.”

Boston Dynamics’ Spot robots perform autonomous patrols of property parameters such as fence lines, exterior doors and other critical assets located outside buildings. Equipped with PTZ industrial video camera, thermal and audio sensor payloads, Spot robots provide continuous monitoring, streaming live data back to command centers, freeing up valuable personnel to focus on other vital security duties.

“For dealers and integrators, this partnership opens up exciting opportunities to offer more advanced and versatile security solutions,” Faenza said. “The integration of Boston Dynamics’ Spot with ASSA ABLOY’s access control systems allows for fully autonomous security patrols and facility monitoring, making it a valuable addition to any security ecosystem. The partnership offers the market technology that increases efficiency, reduces human error, and enhances security operations. It also creates new opportunities for integrators to expand their services and capabilities by integrating robotics and related access control solutions into their existing portfolios.”

With embedded digital access credentials that communicate via Bluetooth with Signo readers from HID, an ASSA ABLOY Group brand, Spot can freely pass through compatible automated doors to patrol the exterior of facilities or to transit interior secured openings.

“This partnership represents a significant leap forward in security and operational efficiency,” Faenza said. “The combination enables 24/7 monitoring, improved response times, and reduced need for human intervention. This technology not only increases safety and reliability but also offers cost savings by optimizing resource allocation and reducing the need for continuous human oversight. Spot does not replace human patrols, but complements them by taking over repetitive, routine, or hazardous tasks, freeing up personnel to focus on other responsibilities and assignments.”
