As the Editor-in-Chief of SDM, Karyn Hodgson is responsible for the overall editorial direction of the magazine, its supplements, e-newsletters and website. She works with the SDM editorial staff to develop content that helps security dealers and systems integrators operate successful businesses. Karyn represents SDM at trade shows and conferences, and directs exclusive research studies such as the SDM Industry Forecast. She also manages SDM’s Dealer of the Year and Systems Integrator of the Year Award programs. Karyn has an MSJ in Journalism (magazine publishing) degree from Northwestern University, and more than 25 years’ experience writing for and about the security industry. Rodney Bosch joined the SDM editorial team in May 2022. He has been covering all facets of the electronic security industry as a trade journalist since 2006. As SDM Senior Editor, Bosch writes exclusive cover stories, such as SDM’s State of the Market series, as well as other feature-length articles. He also heads up the news section for both the emagazine and the website; and manages the annual Monitoring Today and Video Monitoring Today supplements.
Laura Stepanek is a SDM contributing writer. Laura was the Editor of SDM from 2001-2020 and first joined the publication in 1984. She holds a bachelor’s degree in English from Barat College of DePaul University.
On Oct. 9 Axis Communications held a grand reopening of its Axis Experience Center (AEC) in Chicago, which was expanded and revamped to focus on solutions that go beyond just network video to also include network access control and network audio systems, and how they all integrate with products from Axis’ technology partners. Highlights of the AEC are the new Solutions Lab where visitors can get hands on with technologies from Axis and its partners and the new Security Operations Center that emulates the platform used by the city of Chicago’s Office of Emergency Management, which monitors more than 30,000 cameras.

Security journalists from around the world, including SDM’s Editor, Laura Stepanek, were guests of Hikvision at its world headquarters in Hangzhou, China, in October 2015. The tour included a visit of the company’s headquarters and factory, as well as the 2015 China Public Security Expo, and many cultural and historic sites throughout the country.
