HID Global, Irvine, Calif., told SDM in an exclusive interview last week that it released a series of color identity card printer/encoders with a deep range of capabilities to suit the needs of small to large organizations. The line includes the DTC1000, DTC4000 and DTC4500, which are the first direct-to-card FARGO brand printers HID has released since acquiring FARGO in 2006.
The printers introduce the capability to “print and encode cards in a single pass,” said Allan Fontanella, senior director of product marketing identity and access management, HID Global. Using a USB or Ethernet connection, the printers offer the opportunity to personalize cards and program with HID security applications.
An “industry first,” said Fontanella, the printers have an embedded software application —called SwiftID —that allows customers to eliminate the extra cost of buying software to create card templates. According to Fontanella, SwiftID is basically a turnkey solution that is particularly useful in the DTC1000, designed for the entry-level market, where customers may not have a lot of IT knowledge and need to keep their up-front costs low.
This is also where the printers’ modular design can help a company evolve their secure ID printing system as their needs evolve. Modules can be added depending on the model to add technology card encoding, dual-sided printing, dual-input card hoppers, lamination capabilities and more.
The printers also feature SmartScreen, a new graphical interface that displays printer diagnostics on an LED screen like an office copier would. By introducing these kinds of features, Fontanella describes, this new line of printers is leading the industry in intuitive, easy-to-use complete ID badge printing solutions.
With flexibility as a focal point in the printers’ design, the entry-level as well as professional series models feature adaptable configurations that allow them to fit seamlessly in evolving work-spaces.
