SIA and a number of education and law enforcement groups will be supporting the school security bill being introduced in the Senate March 1. This will be the primary response to Parkland being put forward on the Senate side, in addition to a separate measure on NICS/background checks, SIA reported.

Senator Orrin Hatch (R-UT), a member and former Chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, spoke on the Senate floor Feb. 26 about two key proposals he is supporting to promote safety in schools. Hatch’s first proposal fixes holes in the criminal background check system to keep guns out of the hands of those who should not have them. His second proposal reduces school violence by promoting early intervention and prevention programs to stop these tragedies before they happen. Senator Hatch also discussed some of the school safety measures that have worked well in his home state of Utah.
