Security and Safety Things (S&ST) announced the winners of its App Challenge today, awarding three winners 10,000 € each — around $12,000 — and a chance to present their COVID-19 app solutions in retail, manufacturing and transportation at an upcoming S&ST event.
“These developers have proven that innovation can solve a host of problems that no one could have anticipated just a few months ago,” said Hartmut Schaper, chief operating officer of Security & Safety Things.
The winning apps include hand pose detection, parcel detection and privacy masking solutions, created using S&ST’s open IoT platform.
TNG Technology Consulting, based in Munich, won in the retail/commercial building category for its Hand Pose Detection - Visual Feedback application. This application allows retailers to discern customer satisfaction through hand gestures and facial expression emojis. The app enables retailers to glean important customer satisfaction data since facial protection is required in many retail stores.
TNG also won in the transportation and smart city category for its Dynamic Privacy Mask, which anonymizes sensitive data and can mask PIN pads, phones, laptops and humans to give a greater level of privacy. This application offers relevant compliance to different international data and privacy regulations.
Pittsburgh-based Sparkline won in the manufacturing and logistics category for its Parcel Detection app, which informs business owners when a package is left unattended due to a lack of onsite staff. Homeowners and residents of multi-tenant facilities can also benefit from the app.
The winners were chosen by a jury, who reviewed submitted proposals. The best and most innovative proposals were selected to enter the App Challenge. The final and uploaded app results were then presented and demonstrated to the jury by each developer company, so that the jury could choose the best in each vertical.
As part of the App Challenge, 21 new AI-powered analytic apps will be loaded onto the company’s open Application Store, which currently features 60 applications.
