Roller skates, beds, autonomous flying cars, smart clothing, robots, aromatherapy, flexible video screens, wireless everything, drones, artificial intelligence (AI), toys, analytics, smart cities, and anything tech were alive and well at CES 2018 with over 2.75 million square feet of exhibits and 1,000-plus presenters. Other surprises included a flood on opening day of the show— after 190 days of no rain in Las Vegas — and a two-hour power outage at the convention center on day two.
As a result of the rapidly expanding number of potential entry points for attackers, Juniper Research expects the cost of cybercrime to businesses will reach $2 trillion globally by 2019.
A widely held perception is that smart buildings are cost-effective only for large commercial properties of over 100,000 square feet. But through a recent project the Metropolitan Area Advisory Committee (MAAC) a San Diego County non-profit that supplies life-changing services to individuals and families found a quick and easy way to save energy and money at its San Marcos Head Start Center. The non-profit worked with CANDI, an Internet of Things (IoT) technology company that connects devices and data to the services that create smart buildings, to retrofit the 20,000 square-foot day care center into an affordable “green” building. The facilities team at the San Marcos Head Start Center now has the information needed to optimize energy performance, remotely diagnose and control the building’s HVAC systems, and reduce the frequency of maintenance visits.
CANDI announced its collaboration with Google Cloud Platform (GCP) and the launch of a new solution that simplifies the connection of smart building devices and data to apps. Through the integration of Google Pub/Sub and CANDI’s PowerTools, IoT developers and service providers can more easily connect to edge data, link directly into Google’s Cloud Platform toolset, and drive business value across the IoT ecosystem. The solution is designed with out-of-the-box support for smart buildings, which includes reference designs and sensor kits for energy, HVAC, and equipment management using Intel BMP gateways.
The ADT brand is synonymous with security — instantly recognizable by virtually every competitor and potential customer in the United States. Its 143-year history, combined with its massive size (an estimated $4.3 billion in gross revenues in 2017 and ranked No. 1 on the SDM 100 Report every year since its inception in 1991) puts this security dealer in the ranks of some of the largest companies in the country.
Sigma Designs, a provider of intelligent system-on-chip (SoC) solutions for smart TV and Internet of Things (IoT) for smart home, announced the availability of Z-Wave SmartStart, comprising the new Z-Wave protocol and Z-Wave gateway software layers, which together greatly improve installation and enable uniform out-of-the-box set-up of Z-Wave smart home devices. Z-Wave SmartStart pre-configures devices to the network before they reach the home, dramatically reducing installation time to maximize return on investment (ROI) for installers and remove the difficulty of DIY installations for homeowners.
On Augst 1, 2017, a group of U.S. senators plans to introduce legislation designed to address vulnerabilities in Internet-connected devices, or Internet of Things (IoT) devices, according to Reuters.
